TV Advertisement Evaluation

TV Advertisement Evaluation:

The Brief:

Our brief was to pick a product that is under the owner of the multi national organisation Unilever and with our chosen product we had to research about it and make a presentation using the product Prezi to give an in depth analysis of our product's latest advert and their target audience and then we would have to create our own idea for an advert that branch out to a new target audience. Once we finished making our presentation we would then have to pitch our idea for the product new target audience to Unilever representations, this being our class and our teachers in this case. If the pitch went well we were assigned into groups to produce our idea for the advert, first making sure we complete all of the necessary pre-production paperwork needed to do in order to be able start filming.
For me I chose Pot Noodle as my chosen product from Unilever as i believed that would be a good place to try and create a new target audience from a none serious one to a more serious one. When I was assigned to my group of a total of 4 we all had great ideas and me and another person in the group were both doing Pot Noodle and our ideas were almost the same, but we had the rely on if we had the ability to be able to do the advert others had to picked and because both mine and the other members advert were the same we combined it and decided on that because it was easiest on to do. But after we had picked the advert, we had to make sure that the advert we were doing was going towards our desired target audience which was for people more in more of the middle class rather
than the lower class that it was originally assigned to. We chose to do it more in the middle class as they are more of working harder and longer for hours, so we thought as they wouldn't be able to have a proper meal then a pot noodle would instead, so we made it look like a university student making a rush meal for a date he is going to be late for.

The finished product and feedback:

After we finished the advert and distributed on YouTube we had to get feedback from people on whether or not it motivated them to get a Pot Noodle and we got this feedback in two ways as we got feedback from a questionnaire that we sent out to see if the people who have seen the advert on YouTube and to see if it did in fact persuade them to buy a Pot Noodle or not,. The other way we got feedback from is that we had a live showing of our advert and everyone who watched it in our class would then give us feedback on our advert and also our teachers would do the same as well. With
every advert there is some sort of message they want the audience to notice, for instance with a company like Persil they are most known for their product getting rid of tough stains on clothes. With the product I chose which was Pot Noodle has the message of their products being able to made quickly and easily and that basically any body can make it, but with our advert we wanted to keep that message but add to it instead by making the target audience for more middle class people rather than the working class it was currently set towards. I feel that the message we wanted to give to the audience did go through as the feed back was quite good as most wanted to get a Pot Noodle now.

With our advert we had to take into consideration of a lot of the technical qualities that would be seen in the final production of our advert, for instance we had to take into consideration of mise-en-scene in most of scenes, one instance in one of the shots it is shot of a pot noodle container on a windowsill and has beams of reflective light bouncing off it and make it looks quite heavenly and desirable and that was the plan to make it bright and look like it has come down from heaven to help this person in need, we also put it in middle of the shot to make it the center of attention of the shot so the audience will solely focus on the Pot Noddle instead of anything else that might of been in the shot. Another technical quality we had to look out for was the camera and where positioned it and how we made the shot looked, but obviously in some shots the environment is different as we were filming in a location that was being regularly used so the environment would change in each filming session we did, but we did the best we could. but with the camera placement we had to be clever as the area of our filming wasn't very big width wise so we had to pick the right shots and size for the 180 degree rule. Another example of the technical quality we had look out for was the editing and the sound and for the editing to make sure we made it how we wanted it we used the storyboard to help us and remind
us what we need to edit in that shot, for instance we did this with the two shots of the main character in the advert opening the cupboard and with the storyboard we knew that we wanted to make it into a match on action as one shot was outside the cupboard and the other was inside the cupboard instead. With Sound it is the same as editing as we used the storyboard to know what sound effects we needed to get and in which shot we had to add them to with the same instance as
editing with the cupboard doors we knew we want to the door to squeak when they open and close to create some realism in the advert.

As our target audience was middle class/ university students for people who don't have time or aren't used making their food and our little inexperienced with cooking and our advert was to make them a Pot Noodle to help them out and i believe our advert did that by our story line as we took shoes of a university student and how most are not used to cooking for themselves and don't have much food and it gets worse when he has to cook for his date and the Pot Noodle he finds is his hero and saves him from embarrassment and that fact that he was able to cook the Pot Noodle so fast he was able to set up the table and change clothes to something more formal. With our advert we had to use persuasive techniques to make the target audience want to buy a our product we chose, in our case being Pot Noodle, we did use some persuasive techniques like doing our advert on a situation that most people can relate to as most have got into the situation of someone coming over and you forgetting to get food and have to result into something simple instead. Another persuasive technique we used in our advert. With our advert like i have said before has a message we tried to send to our target audience and now i will go into more detail of and our message is that Pot Noodle is a fast made and can be a meal for anyone and isn't just a snack and it for everyone as well not just people who don't earn as much as people who are middle class and with this message we had to use some techniques to ensure people got the message. One of the techniques we used is that the main character was a university student and we did this because most university are middle class based and people who don't earn as much struggle to get into university, where as the middle class have enough to send their kids to university and linking this technique with the last one that university students
mostly aren't very good at cooking or aren't used to cooking for themselves as i have said before so that links to how Pot Noodle is a quick and easy meal to make. Overall i believe that this advert did fit its purpose as the advert is persuasive of people getting the product and the advert looks professional with the camera quality looking amazing with the canon cameras we used and the editing also looks professional as we knew how we wanting it to look and we were able to use a professional editing software Adobe Premiere Pro and the advert we made follows all of the BCAP code, for instance we never mislead the audience on the product and made sure it was always it was Pot Noodle by having it in the background in some shots so the audience knew what was happening. We also didn't cause any harm what so ever to the actors or crew and made sure everything was safe during the production of our advert and we also made sure that the talent had signed the correct paper work as well as the location we were using as well.

Personal Reflection:

Our final advert is very different from our original intention as we had so many problems with locations and having the ability to do the advert in them locations and trying to find other ways to get around it and we had to change our original idea a few times till we had one that could work and we did and sometimes we had problems with our final location like being removed from it because of a complication between people, but we still managed to do it, this is from our storyboard we is drawn from our original idea and we still kept most of the shots the same of the original idea like the putting
the main character's head in their hands and we had to change our location release to the other locations as well instead of the place of our original intentions which was the college's cafeteria and then changed to a small staff room that looked a bit like a normal house's kitchen so we used that and changed our idea to fit the location. With our final edit on our production i am quite satisfied with it, but if i was to do the task again i would try to do our original idea instead of changing it to fit the locations and also be able to film in the our original location we chose to do it in and also maybe film some of the shots more to be able to get more variety in the shots to make the edit a bit better. With my own involvement was quite short as for week during the intended production time i was veyr ill and couldn't help in the production which did impact the filming as i was the main character in the advert and without me, my group couldn't film at all, luckily we were able to film most of the shots before i'd fallen ill but i did manage to get in for one film session and finish the filming and to make sure i contributed enough i did the last of the editing on the advert and made sure everything was good. So overall i was quite happy with my involvement although it short lived due to the ill that fallen upon me but we were still able to finish all the shots and finish editing on time and i was happy with the shots i create via the storyboard with the  approval of the group of course, but i am very happy indeed.
