Understanding developing technologies in the television and film industries.

Consumer Products:

The good thing about the modern era is that anyone can start making films at anytime and gets an insight of the media industry and decide whether or not they want a job in it or not. They reason why it is so easy to start making films as you can go into any shop and get the equipment they need in order to be able to start, they can first get a computer whether it is be a Mac or a PC and get a camera to be able to film or record something on the computer with getting screen recording software and even most phone's now a days have amazing cameras to which you can film with but the only disadvantage is you won't be able to get same effect on the video you would with proper movie camera making cameras, which link to getting editing software to edit your footage to collect, programs like adobe premiere, which is expensive but you get a lot of features and show professionalism or you can get free software like Light works which is free and doesn't offer as much as premiere but is still a good starting editing software for beginners.


Satellite and Cable:

Before satellites were a thing you had a cable that would go under yours house or hang over you from wooden pole or depending on where you live as if you live in a rural area you would mostly likely use satellite and use cable where the providers offer their services which can sometimes exclude rural places. Cable is quite good as it's fast, but not as fast a satellite and can't get effected by poor weather conditions, unlike satellite which can be effected by poor weather conditions, but although satellite can be effect by that, it has faster signal speed compared to cables and also satellite is cheaper than cable. The companies that are behind these two ways of being able to watch TV, you have one of the first, which is BT or British Telecommunications, which uses cable to get there signal to customers and also satellites, but the first company to use satellites which was set up to explore that option was Sky in which they mainly uses satellite to get their signal to their customers. People who get satellite usually get a better ranger of channels to explore that most will also in HD (High Definition), but to that you will have to sign up for a company like Sky or BT, which could be expensive depending on the TV package you get. But people with cable can also get a large range of channels if they have a fiber optic cable, an example is Virgin which offers around 240 channels in which 43 are in HD, but like i have said before only around 50% of homes in the U can get Cable and you will have to sign a 12 month contract rather than a monthly one you can get from a satellite provider and also lacks some of the exclusive channels you can only get with satellite.

Analogue and Digital:

The way we watch television now a day is getting more and more advanced, with now having 4K resolutions television, but before that people had something called "Analogue which was transferred from the source to the TV via something similar to radio, they would AM of amplitude modulation for the video signal of the program and then it would transfer the audio on FM or frequency modulation and thus this cause interference quite a lot. The bandwidth that Analogue used as well was low which restricted the TV's resolution and the overall quality of the images on the screen, only allowing roughly 30 frames per second and only 60Hz for the transmission and the display. The one main draw back of Analogue is the fact that when colour television broadcast became a thing, it was the apparent that it wasn't part of the original equation of analogue TVs, when first approved for commercial and consumer use, as you it messed with the system as the quality of the color and the consistency would vary between television stations. The look of analogue are quite bad as they would have a large back to supports the components of it and antennas also to be able to pick up the signal from the providers, but mostly cable connection would be used and most likely to provide a better signal, but was also able to support satellite as well. 


 The rein of analogue soon edited and in 2012 the main switch over to digital happened and the making and selling of analogue had finished. The reasons for the switch over is because of what digital offered that analogue didn't, for instance the signal of the box would not vary depending on the distance from the source you would ever see the movie or show you are watching or nothing, unlike analogue which gradually failed as the distance increase from the source. The reason why you either see nothing or the show or movie is because digital transfers it as data bits of information, like computer data being written or how music or video is written on a DVD, so it is composed on 1s and 0s, so the signal is transmitted both "off" and "on" and it also helps that the signals is finite causing the signal not to be lost over a long distance from source. Digital has built form the ground up to combat the three main factors of television; B/W, color and audio and is transmitted as an interlaced signal so they all travel together to reduce interference. Digital's bandwidth is similar to one that over takes a analogue TV, it can accommodate not only a high quality images, but the extra space can be used for additional video, audio and text signals. Broadcasters for digital TVs can also supply more feature to it as well, like surround sound, multiply languages, text services and even more because of the extra space digital TVs provide. Digital TV's looks are much better than analogue as the ability to pick up signals easily would make it look they would become slimmer looking, and like the analogue would be able to support both cable and satellite connection, and would be able to connect to loads providers like BT, Sky and Virgin, as they showed sometime after digital became the main format of Television and were able to given extra features.


Internet and Interactive:

with the internet becoming more and more advanced every day with new data being collect on it every second, there has been tons of advancements to the way we can watch media on it like for example is Netflix as we are able to monthly subscription to watch tons of movies and TV shows. But also because of the abilities that the internet provides it also allows people to illegal transfer movie and TV shows to each other without having to pay for it, so things like Netflix that are overlooked as people will just get it via piracy on websites like pirate bay or put-locker. The internet also introduced another media platform in which media can be shared and bought, which is called "YouTube", which is media platform where anyone can upload their projects to website and can be viewed by anyone they want and has become one way into the media industry. YouTube is also great because it uses interactive features that allow the audience to be able to speak and talk to who they watch and possible get a reply from them and also be able to leave a rating allow the creator to know how other people think of their project. Television also has this but to not to the same extent but you have things like shopping channels to which people show off a product and allow you to call in a be able to buy the product you like the look of , another example is X-Factor as it allows you to call in the show and pick your favorite contestant and possible allow them to continue on to the show or be able to call in a get the kick off the show, the same applies for shows like Britain's Got Talent and I'm a Celebrity Get me out of Here. 




High Definition and 3-D:

With digital televisions becoming more popular and being able to offer HD or High Definition meant that the TV would be able to have a better pictures as it allowed more pixels on the screen and a higher resolution also. But now almost every TV is HD and it was same near the start of Digital as well, but unfortunately hardly any providers were, like Free view. HD provides 720p or 720 pixels by 720 pixels and then later advanced onto 1080p and this allowed film makers to make their film better visual qualities and their audience will be able to experience their project in even better detail than before, especially for cinema's as their screen are 4K which allows a crystal clear viewing of the film maker's film and will be allowed to see every detail. Now even 8k is available to be used, but because TV's screen can be only so big, they have to stick with 4k as 8K compressed to fit the screen would make the quality bad and ruin the experience. Time has also advanced to not only having the 3-D option within cinema's but also within televisions also, but 3-D or Three dimensional, is a format which allows the audience to perceive flat images in a life like look, to an extent to which you can touch what your watching and when it was first introduced it took the world by storm from the first film ever to use 3-D in a out of house place, which was movie in 1922 called the power of love and after that 3-D was sort of forgotten till digital was introduced and it came back and almost every film had 3-D availability to which after that was kind of forgotten till a movie called "Avatar" brought it back and most movies now are in 3-D because of its succession, movies like "Alice in Wonderland" and "How to train your Dragon" also helped 3-D because of the succession as well.    


Types of viewing Films and TV:

There are many different ways that people can watch both movies and television series and they all exist and are used to this day. One is pay per view which is old but it still used today with providers like Sky. Pay per View basically means you pay to watch either a movie or a television show once on your television and that its, you won't be able to see that specific event again as the providers airs the program when the orders have been placed for the event, it is mostly seen in fighting, or sports events like Boxing or WWE and it does help a lot as you will watch the entirety of the program to make sure you got money's worth. Pay per view is also making its way to the internet as well, being called internet pay per view which is basically the same thing as the television pay per view. The next type of viewing is opposite to pay per view as it called On-Demand Viewing, which instead of the person paying to see one specific timed event, instead you would be pay for either one film or program series or a collection for either once to rent or buy, an example is Sky
on demand which allows you to buy movies to which you watch anytime and doesn't run out, but another different example of this is Netflix or Amazon Instant Video as it allows you to watch tons of different movies and television programs for a monthly payment to them and they also added more as well to keep their audience entertained, and because digital TVs have gotten more advanced with smart TVs you don't need to go on your computer to access these things but you can access them through your TV. With the internet one of the most popular things in the world of course channels providers on the television would eventually switch over to internet so they can appeal to a new and also larger audience compared to them just staying with the television, the providers who have done this is, is providers like the BBC, ITV and Channel Four which have switch over to the internet as BBC Iplayer ITV Hub and More4 , which allow their audience to be able to view their content again just in case they missed it or want to rewatch it, but it is different as channel providers make you login with an account to see if you have a provider like Sky or BT license so you can watch their content and aren't trying to do it for free. You then have things like digital recorders which allow you to save the content to a hard drive,s omething like a DVD recorder which allows you to copy the orginal disk onto another one, this can be linked back to piracy, but is not very common as most people look for the pirate movies and tv shows online instead.
