Photo Connotation Exercise

Loneliness

The denotation of this image is that it is a boy sitting by himself on a wall by the water. The connotation can suggest isolation as the boy is by himself and no one else is near him and it could also suggest sadness as the boy facial expression shows some sort of sadness of him being by himself and that no one else is near him to show any sort of companionship. The camera angle shows the feeling of loneliness as it is a canted angle which gives the impression that the image is meant to be a less happy scene as that angle is used mostly sad or depressing scenes. The shot distance also gives off the impression of loneliness as it is a long shot as it allows the camera to pick up the entire body of the boy and allow the viewer to see both his facial and body language and also show that he his alone in this environment.

Fear

The denotation of this image is that there is a person leaning against a fence with a second person behind the person leaning on the fence. The connotation of this image is that it is meant to show fear and in this image it shows the fear of the unknown of not being able to see the person who is in trouble or the attacker or even if the person is in trouble or not, this image also suggest that this person is stuck with no ability to get or receive any help by anyone. It also shows isolation as the person is by them selves and has no way to help their selves. The camera angle also shows fear and weakness as it is a high angle shot to show that the shadow is in trouble and is shown as being weak or inferior to the camera and to the mystery person who is behind them. The shot distance also shows fear as it is a mid shot to able to the shadow body language and its hand placement to show that the person is trying to escape and can't, it shows also that the shadow is also looks like its trying to reach out for help but to no avail.

Wealth

The denotation of this image is a boy on the phone and showing off his watch in a bright beautiful place, the phone and watch is shown to look expensive. The connotation of the image is to show wealth which is achieved by the boy showing of the his expensive accessories which are his watch and his phone which is to most people can tell the phone is from an expensive nature and that the watch could give a sense of mystery as the viewer can not tell whether or not watch was expensive or not and has to trust the picture, this is can also give the sense of deception. The shot distance gives off the sense of wealth from the image as it is a close up to allow the viewer to see the boy in more detail and the accessories he has and also see a bit fo his facial expression which show that he looks worry free. The camera angle allows gives off the sense of wealth as it is a eye-level angle to show the viewer of the image how much he has in items are worth in the close up and it also allows the viewer to feel more close to the person in the picture, which can make the viewer be more believable to the fact of the person in the picture having these expensive objects in the picture.

Purity

The denotation of this is image is that it is a picture of a church slightly covered by branches and leaves of the surrounding it and it is a bright church.The connotation of this image is that it could suggest purity hence the title by the just taking a picture of the church as a church is seen as a place of purity and the people who go to church are also seen as being pure, because they believe in God and the the surrounding trees could also show purity as nature is seen as pure because of its beauty and serenity in the world. the image could also suggest the church being a sanctuary as in most films and TV shows when a person or group of people are being chased or need a place to stay they normally go to a church as a church is seen as a safe place and people who go in the church always feel safer. The camera angle of the shot is meant to show purity as it is a slight worm's eye view to make the church seem vast and superior to the rest of the image and which can gives off the sense of purity as something so vast can make people feel safe. The shot distance is a long shot to show of the church in its entirety and get some of the surrounding nature in as well, this as well creates the sense off purity as like i said before being able to see the whole church in vast state creates purity as it stills creates the safety for people when they go inside of it.

Friendship

The denotation of this image is a person who has fallen down and the being helped up by someone, seeming to be a friend. the connotation of this image suggest friendship as the person helping the person who has fallen seemingly seems like a friend who helping his other friend up. the image can also suggest happiness as both of the people seems to have a happy expression on their faces, suggesting that the person who had fallen over made it a funny situation and made both on them laugh. The image also could suggest safety as when people are with their friends they always feel safe, as friends always have each others backs and look after one another. The shot distance is a long shot to show that the viewer of the image the entire body language and a bit of their facial expressions as well and to also show the fact that there isn't any other people trying to help the person on the ground up, only the his friends showing the friendship they have. The camera angle also gives the sense of friendship as the it is a eye level angle so the viewer can feel like they are part of the scenario and they can see the friendship the two have between each other.
