Research Dossier

Research Dossier:

With every production there is some sort of research involved with it and my documentary was no exception as i had to do quite a lot of research in order to ready to film my production and also write the script in order to look like i knew what i was talking about.

Secondary Research:

Secondary research is the research to which the research gets the information for their production from another person's research, an example is my documentary to which i got all my secondary information from the website below.

Leading Charity fighting against Crohn’s Disease: Crohn's and Colitis: About Crohn's Disease

What is Crohn’s Disease?

Crohn’s disease is a condition that causes inflammation in either the digestive system or any part of the gut but the most common places are the ileum, Which is the last part of the small intestine, or the in the colon. The areas in which the inflammation effected are patchy with some sections being completely normal the inflammation patches can be small or extend large distances inside the gut. Sometimes the Crohn’s can go deeper in the bowel wall as it can affect the lining of the bowel.

Crohn’s is a chronic condition, this means it is ongoing and life – long, and sometimes you will have periods of good health or remission and then Crohn’s disease will become more active also known as relapses or flare ups.

Quantitative Research:

Quantitative Research is any research that has to with numbers or percentages, so naything mathematical and show the number behind a certain fact that you are presenting, an example of this is below with my statistics of crohn's disease that shows the numbers of how many people are effected by Crohn's Disease

Statistics of Crohn’s Disease:

At least 115,000 people in the UK are affected by Crohn’s Disease.
It is more common in women than it is in men.
No cure for Crohn’s disease
As many as one in three people with Crohn’s were under 21 when first diagnosed
The disease can start at any age, but usually appears for the first time between 10 and 40
Crohn’s is being diagnosed more often, particularly among teenagers and children.

Symptoms of Crohn’s Disease:

·         skin problems, such as mouth ulcers, blisters and ulcers on the skin, and painful red swellings, usually on the legs
·         inflammation of the eyes
·         thinner and weaker bones
·         liver inflammation
·         blood clots (including deep vein thrombosis)
·         anaemia (a reduced level of red blood cells)

     Primary Research:

Primary research is the research that the researcher does by themselves and get the information by them self and doesn't use other people's research from different websites, this can be done via a questionnaire, surveys, focus groups or a audience panel to which they can answer the question that you have created and allow you to collect the results. An is that I created a survey and link to both my primary audience which is teenagers as Crohn's disease is becoming more common in them than in adults and my secondary audience which is adults as to not let them effect and look out for signs within their kids. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/F3ZZMMR

  Interviews:

I  will be interviewing two people in my documentary about Crohn's disease. The first one will be my mum or Paula Dyble as you is the main part  of it as she suffers from Crohn's Disease and it will be great to talk to her about how the disease has effected her and her day to day life. The second person i will be interviewing is my Nan or Elaine Shelliard who is the mother of Paula Dyble and also an ex nurse who knows about Crohn's disease and how she felt when her daughter was diagnosed and the fact that she studied a degree about bowel diseases as well.

The Plan:

My plan for the documentary is to first show an analogy of apple which looks in perfect conditions to begin with then it will be cut and shown that the inside of the apple is disgusting showing that people with Crohn's Disease look fine on the outside but in the inside they are not and sometimes that leaks outside. I will then discuss what Crohn's Disease and i will then ask the first question to Paula about how it effect her then show an nice wide shot of a environment and then switch to a establishing shot of my Nan's house and then fades to my Elaine answering the questions what was your reaction when your daughter was diagnosed and then cutaway to an image of something linking towards Crohn's Disease and continue to interview with Paula about how the disease effects her day to day life. Then i will show some statistics about Crohn's disease. The documentary will end with plea about looking out for Crohn's Disease and spread the awareness of it.

   Data gathering agencies:

For the finished product of the documentary, I would then have to find a place to put in on the television schedule, i would then first need to go to these "data gathering agencies" and see who watches what channels and what time they do it the most and then i will be able to use that in order to place my documentary there so loads of people would be able to see it. The most popular one people use in order to find out this information is a company called "BARB" or Broadcasters Audience Research Board, BARB collects the data of what people watched over to course of the week and collect the data and puts on their websites allowing their clients being able to see the figures and allow them to decide where they should put their program there or not, people also might look on other websites like Box Office Mojo, which shows people what movies made at the Box Office which allows people either see their competition or what they could possible make with their production and also they could check out the website IMDB which they could the check out the competition ratings and also allows people to see where movies are being played near them and what cinema is the best place to try and get their production there. Another example of a "data gathering agency" is a company which jointly owned by the BBC or the British Broadcasting Corporation and also the Radio Centre called RAJAR or Radio Joint Audience Research. which is like BARB to which instead of gathering the data of the all the channels like the BARB, but instead gathers the data of the channels and radio stations that both the BBC and Radio Centre own.

      Production Research:

Production research is important especially when planning a new production idea, because it helps with things like the pre-production process, the viability of the production for commercial use and also with the content of the production and to get the research for the production the director or producers would hire researchers to gather information about the area the are looking, for instance either locations or financial reasons. The research also will include coverage over advertisements for the production and the placement of the production to be able to get a audience to see it and gain possible notability and one of the important things is the ability to keep track of the income and outgoing cost of the production as well. The income coming from possible sponsorship or seeing merchandise and if the production has a famous celebrity could increase the notability of the
production as well and for the outgoing cost would be towards the advertisement side of the production's spectrum and also the distribution of the final production as well. The researchers will also search for the viability of the production's employee to see if they are up to standard and and also improve their income from the company as well and also help the production client or developer keep with the timescale provided to them to finish the production, an example would be getting the production done by Christmas as to increase the possible numbers of buyers of the product. So for my documentary when i did my production research i done the research myself and when i research the things i needed to research was easy because i knew what i needed to do and was able to find the location easier as locations belong to the two personnel in my documentary and they allowed and signed for me to be able to use their property in my documentary as well allowing themselves to be in it as well. When i was researching for the viability of it as well was easy as for the finance i didn't need to spend any money as i went to the locations myself and also had to the equipment i used provided to me by my college which has the good cameras to use for the documentary.

 Audience and Market Research:

Audience research is the research in which the research team does before the start of the production in order to be able to know which target audience would be best suitable for their production they're creating, this can be under the things like age, gender, ethnic background, location, income and the media they already watch as well. This is very vital for any media company that wants their production to be successful because if you target your production for the wrong target audience in can cause problems down the line with research that is conducted after or the actual production of the project and how the finished production might be advertised and causing the production not to be as successful as the company first hoped for like the movie fantastic four which was a real build up and made people excited for it and the company put a lot into advertisement and once it was out every thought it was complete rubbish and this could cause cancellation on any sequels or spin off in the
future. Researchers can also use different methods of research like getting qualitative and quantitative research to also help to aim their product at the right target audience, because quantitative uses data and numbers from things like program ratings, box office sales, websites hits or DVD sales like for mine it was to do with the statistics of research for my documentary and how many views it will get on YouTube and possibly compare it to another project a company had done, or in my case i have done and use that information to make the product good and the next one even better. Qualitative is finding out the views and opinions of their audience about the production you have done in the past and be able to use that in order to make your current production even better then them, this can be from reviews, websites, newspapers or blogs. As both Primary and Secondary and can also been used to help target their production to the right audience in the form of using questionnaires, statistics, focus groups and also newspapers as well.

With Market Research they're are many reasons why it is a necessity to be able to make a successful production, one of it is the fact production companies need to know what their target audience is expecting in their production in order to be able to make it more successful. Market research can also discover possible trends that might come up in a few years allowing them to be able to get ready for that and use it to their advantage as it will mean they might be ahead of their competition. An example of this is with the popular UK show "The only way is Essex, as when the reality show "Big Brother" was canceled in 2010 a new type of reality show was needed and ITV noticed and started doing research into it, they discovered that American reality shows like the "The Hill" and The City" were very popular and ITV took a chance to believe it would be the same and it worked with their
show "The only way is Essex" gained huge popularity, to which other media companies took notice and started making their own like "Made in Chelsea" and "Jersey Shore". With conducting Market Research they're are many way to do it, one of the ways is the form of using surveys which can be done in different ways like in person surveys, telephone surveys online surveys or web surveys, this can help a company by allowing them to analyze a sample group of people which are based on their target audience. Another way of doing market research is through focus groups, as these will discuss certain topics which you will give them and it will be recorded and allows you to use what they talked about for your production to help it be more suited towards the target audience. Another way of gaining market research is through personal interviews to which are similar to focus groups to which they're recorded and of course are one on one situations. To which this method a more detailed insight into their target audience for their production compared to something like surveys which can only get the most detail into what you set the questions. The last way of conducing market research that i shall discuss is the form of researching on observation, allowing the company to observe their target audience in their natural behavior and allows to let the company see their reaction to similar products.
